The Dreame Roboticmower A2 is a high-tech robot with the OmniSense 2.0 navigation system. It combines 3D LiDAR with a 1,080p HDR camera for precise navigation and obstacle detection. It scans its surroundings at a distance of up to 70 metres with a 360° field of view and can identify everything from garden furniture to smaller objects such as toys and garden tools. The Garden Guardian feature gives the mower a secondary role as a security guard, where it can monitor the garden via the camera, patrol at specific times and send alerts if it detects people on the property.

Installation and mapping

Automatic mapping works best on straightforward lawns. On the test lawn, with its various nooks and crannies and an open path to the driveway, it took so many attempts that I eventually gave up and drew the track manually. It takes a little time, but provides good control. During the test, I noticed that the Dreame is easier to manoeuvre than a Husqvarna, which had a remote control. It turns more intuitively, more like a radio-controlled car, whereas the Husqvarna turns more unpredictably. The modular design means that all parts are replaceable, resulting in a longer service life and a more sustainable life cycle. The Dual Map feature allows you to store two separate garden maps – ideal for properties with separate lawn areas or for those who have both a home and a holiday home.

Dreame Roboticmower A2 in operation

The cutting pattern can be freely selected between straight, angled and checkerboard patterns, as well as a rotating pattern to avoid stripes. However, you cannot choose a random pattern, which is supposedly best for biodiversity and the overall health of the lawn. The robot works systematically in straight lines back and forth, giving a very neat appearance. After two passes back and forth over the area, I noticed almost no missed grass edges, and it finishes elegantly with an edge trim. However, it does not go all the way to lawn edges that are adjacent to a slab or house wall, in which case you will need to use a manual edge trimmer afterwards. This is the same for all robotic lawnmowers. The cutting height can be adjusted electronically between 30-70 mm via the app.

With a noise level of only 55 dB, the Dreame A2 is one of the quietest robot lawn mowers on the market. The lawn mower can handle slopes of up to 50 per cent thanks to powerful wheel motors. But even though it handled slight slopes well, it still had problems on my own lawn with a slope of no more than 45 degrees. The app is functional and provides a good overview, but it has one limitation: you have to pause the mower or put it back in the charging station before you can change the settings.

Conclusion

The Dreame A2 delivers a precise and orderly mowing result with its systematic mowing pattern that produces a striped lawn. The advanced LiDAR technology and AI camera make navigation precise, but automatic mapping works best on simple lawns. With a price tag of €3,000, it is expensive, but the technology and functionality make it a solid choice for larger and more complex gardens. Particularly suitable for those who value a systematic, orderly appearance on the lawn and need extra features such as monitoring.

High End

Systematic cutting pattern gives a neat result. Good manoeuvrability during setup. Relatively easy mapping. Handles fairly steep slopes. Can store multiple garden maps. High price. Must pause the mower to change settings. Automatic mapping could work better. No RTK base station for precision mapping.
