This year is the year of 5G mobiles. At the time of writing, only Apple does not yet have 5G mobiles in the range, while companies such as Samsung, Huawei, OnePlus and Sony all have up to several among their top models. At the same time, more and more 5G networks are going online,  so if you have not dealt with 5G technology so far, it is soon time.

What is 5G?

The new mobile network technology is a successor to, and expansion of, the existing 4G / LTE network. In short, there are three major benefits of 5G: greater bandwidth (theoretically up to 100 times faster than 4G), greater capacity and less (almost non-existent) delay, and the following lightning-fast response times (down to 1 ms). This means that (many) multiple devices can be connected to the network at the same time. And that the devices communicate with lightning speed and without any kind of delay with each other and servers on the network.

On the other hand, the coverage area for each 5G antenna is very limited, which is a significant reason why the 5G network will be far more fine-grained than previous mobile networks. It is simply a necessity to ensure the necessary coverage.

What does 5G mean for my mobile right now?

Based on the services we know today, you have virtually no practical advantage from the fact that your mobile supports 5G. And the services that can use 5G to create real added value for users have not been invented yet.

That said, with 5G you will of course experience significantly higher network speeds, which in turn means shorter download times (a 1GB game downloaded to your mobile in between 30 and 60 seconds), and your “ping” and thus latency will be lower. You will notice this if you use your mobile for multiplayer games like Fortnite. The faster network reduces delays in communication between your mobile and servers, so that you actually have time to move in the game without the ball having time to pierce your skull.

What does 5G mean for my mobile in the long run?

According to both telecom operators and mobile phone manufacturers, gaming is one of the areas where 5G will make a huge difference. Cloud gaming via 5G opens up for hardware and platform-independent gaming experiences in the highest quality. The game no longer needs to run on a console or a powerful gaming PC, because 5G offers both high speeds and extremely low latency, so any game can be run on servers in the cloud and streamed to any kind of device.

You will also be able to let others get really close to your own life, either through lightning-fast uploading of videos to social media and chats or via live streaming. Thanks to far greater capacity and higher speeds via the 5G network, it will be possible even from places where there are many people gathered at once (for example concerts), which with the existing network technologies would overload the mobile network.

You must be aware of this when buying a new mobile phone

The battery

Measured in mAh (milli-Ampere-hours), which in very simple terms indicates how long the mobile has power. The more mAh, the better. At a minimum, you should go for 3000 mAh, but if your phone has a large screen (around 6 inches or more), the number should be even higher. Especially if the screen is also very bright.

Camera

Today, many mobiles come with two or more lenses, and if you want to take good pictures with your mobile, you should look for things like autofocus, wide angle and / or ultra wide angle, optical zoom, optical image stabilization, night mode, etc. In return you can forget all about megapixels. It has almost no bearing on how good your photos will be.

Storage

You must never, ever, ever buy a mobile that only comes with 8 or 16 gigabytes of internal storage. Only the operating system (typically Android) requires so much space that there is almost no space left if you do not have at least 32 gigabytes to route.

Many mobiles allow you to expand the built-in storage via microSD card or similar, but be aware that external memory cards are a bit slower than the phones’ own ROM.

Charging

More and more mobiles, especially in the middle class and of course most more expensive models, come with the option of fast charging and / or wireless charging. It is to live with the fact that the mobile can not hold the power for a whole day, if it can charge from 0 to 50 percent power in half an hour or less.

Screen

Be aware that a large screen does not automatically mean that there is plenty of space for apps, etc. Resolution is just as important, and even today the cheapest mobiles come with only HD resolution, while the most expensive models typically have 2K screens or better.

When the resolution is higher, the working area of the screen becomes even larger, and the image quality is of course better and the graphics sharper.
